EPD – Environmental Product Declarations
How do we actually know the environmental impact of a product? This is where Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) play a crucial role.
An EPD is an internationally recognized way of describing a product’s environmental impact from a life cycle perspective—from raw material to waste. The information is based on life cycle assessments (LCA) and is verified through independent third-party review, making it both comparable and reliable.
A global system for informed decisions
Behind this work is EPD International, which operates and develops the international EPD system—a system for the verification and registration of environmental product declarations.
Through this system, transparent and quality-assured environmental data is created and used by companies, organizations, and authorities worldwide. EPDs are used in areas such as construction, product development, and procurement—fields where the demand for climate data and traceability is growing rapidly. The goal is simple but important: to enable better, more informed decision-making.
What is an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), and how is it developed?
The video explains what an EPD is and outlines the five steps to develop one.
A rapidly evolving field
The EPD field has grown significantly in recent years and continues to evolve in step with the increasing demand for reliable environmental data. The organization has developed its own services, processes, and ways of working, and operates in an international context with clients and regulatory frameworks from different parts of the world. This makes EPD a fast-moving area—across technology, standards, and business models—where new approaches are continuously being shaped.
From data to real impact
Working with EPD is not just about data and analysis, but about contributing to real change. By making the environmental impact of products visible, it becomes possible to:
compare solutions
set clearer requirements
reduce climate and resource impact
EPDs thus become an important tool in the transition to a more sustainable society.
Part of IVL
EPD International is a wholly owned subsidiary of IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and a central part of IVL’s work to promote sustainable solutions through research, innovation, and expert support. Together, we develop methods and systems that make it easier to understand, compare, and improve the environmental performance of products—globally and in the long term.
The EPD team currently consists of around 20 people and is growing in line with the increasing demand for reliable environmental data. The team is based in Stockholm and Gothenburg and operates in a knowledge-intensive and internationally oriented environment, where collaboration, development, and quality are at the core.
