Master thesis: Ozone treatment for reduction of organic micropollutants
Laboratory Work at LTH Combined with Groundbreaking Applied Research – Drive Innovation with Us!
Doing your master thesis with us at IVL gives you the opportunity to get a unique insight into our research and our work. It's a chance to learn a lot more in your field of study. We welcome master thesis students every semester.
About the master thesis
We are looking for a motivated student from Lund University of Technology for a degree project to be carried out during the spring semester of 2026. In this project, you will help develop methods for optimising ozone processes at Swedish wastewater treatment plants. The project combines research and practical application with the aim of improving the control of ozone treatment, a technology that plays a crucial role in reducing organic micropollutants in wastewater.
Background
The EU’s new Urban Wastewater Directive requires the removal of micropollutants before wastewater is discharged. This means Swedish treatment plants must implement advanced treatment, where ozone treatment is an attractive solution due to its efficiency and low climate impact.
What will you do?
As a thesis student, you will:
- Focus on the initial validation of the Electron Donating Capacity (EDC) method.
- Perform laboratory experiments to measure EDC before and after ozonation.
- Analyze how changes in EDC correlate with the degradation of micropollutants and the potential formation of by-products.
- Use UV absorbance as a complementary parameter and contribute to the development of robust tools for process monitoring.
You will work in an inspiring research environment, supported by experienced supervisors, and collaborate closely with Swedish wastewater treatment plants.
We will evaluate applications on a rolling basis and accept candidates as soon as we find a suitable match.
