Meet a Former Thesis Project Student
-
I completed a Master's in Civil Engineering with a focus on Road and Water Construction at Lund University of Technology. For my thesis project, I concentrated on the ability of small and medium-sized companies to carry out climate assessments in accordance with the Climate Declaration Act, as part of IVL's 'Kunskapslyftet SME' project. I chose to work at IVL after an inspiring guest lecture on sustainable building materials, which aligned with my future goals. My time as a thesis project student at IVL was enriching; I felt welcomed and integrated into the team, and being at the office gave me access to expert assistance when needed.

As a chemical engineering graduate with a focus on industrial ecology from Chalmers University of Technology, I conducted my thesis project at IVL. I compared three different LCA frameworks to analyze the environmental impact of biofuels (HVO). The reason I chose IVL was their intriguing areas of work and proximity to Chalmers. Despite my thesis project being conducted remotely during the pandemic, my knowledgeable supervisor was an invaluable resource. The most rewarding aspect of my thesis project at IVL was the opportunity to discuss ideas with an expert in the field and share my findings with the entire LCM team.

Meet Supervisors at IVL
-
I view supervision as a means to provide students with the opportunity to engage in projects, often directed towards industry, where their efforts can hopefully have a broader impact. With students having an entire semester to contemplate a specific research question, they can delve deep into it, and together, we develop new insights and ponder new ideas. To be an effective supervisor, I believe that clear expectations and student engagement are crucial. My flexibility and accessibility for questions and feedback are fundamental to a rewarding supervision experience. Lastly, although my projects at IVL are not dependent on the outcomes of thesis projects, we highly value the valuable contributions that students bring to the table.

I supervise thesis projects in physical geography at IVL because it is rewarding to follow a student's journey from formulating goals to delivering the final result. Watching the student become an expert in their field is inspiring, and I always learn something new. The most valuable aspect of supervising is how students' in-depth knowledge can contribute to IVL's projects and research, while their university connections open up new ideas. To be a good supervisor, I believe clarity and attentiveness are key to helping the student focus and find the right direction.
