About the master thesis
Background
The ENFLATE (ENabling FLexibility provision by all Actors and sectors through markets and digital TEchnologies) project is a Horizon Europe initiative aimed at facilitating the shared use of renewable energy sources and increasing clean energy penetration in the power system. It also seeks to reduce grid operating costs and boost economic benefits.
Technology-driven electronic and digital solutions will enhance the flexibility and robustness of local, regional, national, and cross-border distribution and transmission networks. Over its 48-month duration, ENFLATE will build on existing consumer-focused flexibility platforms and digital tools to develop a new, highly interoperable ENFLATE platform that integrates with other Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe platforms.
The advantages of data exchange and adaptive middleware architectures will be tested through large-scale demonstrations in Bulgaria, Greece, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. These demonstrations will support the creation of new flexible markets and business models where consumers, prosumers, aggregators, TSOs, DSOs, and asset owners collaborate to provide flexibility for a sustainable energy transformation.
A demo site in the Kungsbacka municipality has been studied using an energy systems optimization model. Flexibility options and measures at the demo site, along with their potential to contribute to more efficient energy generation and distribution, have been identified.
Aims
Based on the modeling results, the effects of the identified flexibility measures will be extrapolated to the national level—assuming the demo site's potential could be implemented across all Swedish district heating companies—while considering the characteristics of the four electricity zones (SE1–SE4).
Expected outcomes
• Review of works that have upscaled flexibility potentials in Sweden and beyond.
• Characterization of flexibility at the demo-site by relevant attributes (e.g. amount of power modulation, duration, rate of change, response time, location, delivering time, time availability, predictability, controllability and purpose).
• Qualitative and quantitative upscaled potentials, across the SE1-SE4 electricity zones.
Methods
Literature review, interviews, data processing, analysis.

About IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet
IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute is an independent research institute with the broadest environmental profile in Sweden. Together with businesses, government agencies, and the research community, we drive the transition towards a sustainable society – from science to reality.
We engage in applied research and consulting assignments that contribute to achieving both the global sustainability goals and Sweden's environmental objectives.
Our base is in Sweden, with operations in India and China and our clients are located all over the world. The group has a turnover of 574 million SEK, and the Institute for Water and Air Protection Research Foundation (SIVL) is the sole owner of IVL. Representatives from both the business sector and government agencies sit on our boards.
