Master thesis: Analysis of Current and Conceptual Biomethanol Value Chains
Doing your master thesis with us at IVL gives you the opportunity to get a unique insight into our research and our work. It's a chance to learn a lot more in your field of study. We welcome master thesis students every semester.
About the master thesis
Background
BioMeGaFuel develops a novel biomethanol production route with lower cost and GHG emissions (see also https://www.ivl.se/english/ivl/our-offer/research-projects/energy/bio-megafuel.html). To understand its role in Europe’s energy transition, it is necessary to map and analyse both current and conceptual value chains, focusing on all actors from feedstock to the end-use sectors (shipping, chemicals).
Objectives
- Map current biomethanol value chains: actors, logistics, energy/resource flows, business models.
- Draft conceptual/future value chains based on potential synergies in production, logistics, and markets.
- Analyse barriers and opportunities for large-scale deployment in EU, with a case focus on the Netherlands.
Scope, Methods & Expected Results
Scope
- Focus: Value chains for biomethanol
- Pathways: gasification, biogas-to-methanol, CO₂ hydrogenation, biochemical fermentation.
- Case study: Netherlands (key partners: Gidara, Perpetual Next).
- End-use sectors: shipping (incl. subsegments), chemicals (subsegments),
Method
- Literature review & desk research.
- Stakeholder interviews (industry partners, technology providers, ports).
- Use of Business Model Canvas & Value Proposition Design for analysis.
Expected Results
- 2–3 mapped current value chains (Europe/Netherlands) .
- 2–3 conceptual future value chains with identified synergies.
- Assessment of synergies and roles for different actors, logistics set-ups, and business models.
- Recommendations for how partners can position themselves in the biomethanol value chain.
Timing
The work should be ready and presented for the IVL -team latest the end of May 2026 but with agreed partial reporting/ discussion during Spring 2026
