Master thesis: Using Life Cycle Assessment to Quantify the Environmental Impacts of Food Products from Waste Streams
A Comparative Study with Conventional Production
Doing your master thesis with us at IVL gives you the opportunity to get a unique insight into our research and our work. It's a chance to learn a lot more in your field of study. We welcome master thesis students every semester.
About the master thesis
The environmental impact of food production is drawing increasing attention from both the media and policymakers. One way to reduce this impact is by utilizing waste flows from primary production, transforming them into valuable food products. However, this approach requires shifts in both production practices and consumer behaviour. In this master thesis project, you will aim to quantify the environmental impacts associated with food products derived from waste flows and compare these impacts with similar products from conventional production systems, using life cycle assessment (LCA). This master’s thesis is part of a larger project to develop novel foods and promote sustainable consumption patterns.
Purpose and scope
The purpose of this thesis is to use life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantify the potential climate impact savings achieved by utilizing waste streams instead of conventional production methods. This approach aims to demonstrate the benefits of repurposing existing food resources that would otherwise be wasted, thereby reducing environmental impact while also strengthening local food supply chains and readiness in times of crisis.
Prerequisites
We welcome students that have taken one course in LCA and preferably have some. To speak Swedish is advantage in data collection at site but is not mandatory.
