Do you want to work for a sustainable society? Join us at IVL.
Bridging science and society
At IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, we conduct applied research and consultancy for organisations and companies that need expert support in environmental and sustainability issues. To deliver this, we work closely with both industry and the public sector. Today, IVL employs around 500 environmental specialists covering most areas of environment and sustainability.
IVL has offices in several locations across Sweden, including Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Fiskebäckskil and Skellefteå. We also have an international presence, with offices in Mumbai in India, Beijing and Wuhan in China, Bogotá in Colombia, and Amman in Jordan. In addition, IVL has a few colleagues who work remotely, including from France and Spain.
Our team includes engineers, environmental scientists, behavioural scientists, economists, communicators, IT specialists and social scientists, to name just a few. We combine broad expertise with deep specialist knowledge – one quarter of our employees hold doctorates. IVL's expertise is in high demand, and our work makes a real impact. Maybe you are our next colleague?
Our vision is a sustainable society
We are a driving force in producing and disseminating the knowledge needed for the transition to a sustainable society. We are pushing the shift to a sustainable society by:
taking science to society.
turning environmental challenges into solutions.
transforming linear processes into a circular economy.
Our core values
-
Collaborative
Collaboration is about creating better results when we work and grow together, both internally and externally. By being considerate and inclusive, and by providing constructive feedback, we foster a positive and development-focused environment where we make each other better.
-
Professional
Being professional means taking responsibility and acting with integrity, credibility and objectivity – always based on scientific evidence. We show respect, trust and confidence, using our expertise to build valuable relationships and achieve results.
-
Forward-looking
Being forward-looking means identifying opportunities, anticipating challenges, and creating sustainable, long-term solutions. By embracing courage and curiosity, we drive progress and pave the way for a sustainable future.
Why culture matters at IVL
Social activities
Community is an important part of everyday life at IVL. Our sports, arts, and cultural associations in Sweden are run by engaged employees and supported by the organization, creating many opportunities to connect outside of day-to-day work. For example, you can take part in fitness activities, try new sports, visit exhibitions, or participate in our annual art lottery.
At IVL, we come together in both larger and smaller settings. Every other year, the entire organization gathers for our shared IVL Day, and in between, local activities are arranged, such as annual summer and holiday celebrations at our various offices. In addition, informal social events are organized, including pub evenings and game nights.
In everyday work life, we meet over breakfast and fika every other week, as well as through shared initiatives such as Lunch & Learn sessions, where we exchange knowledge and get to know each other across teams and areas of expertise. This contributes to a work environment where it is easy to build new connections and collaborate.

A selection of our benefits
-
We offer flexible working hours and hybrid work arrangements where appropriate for the business. At the same time, we value the sense of community at our offices, where we connect through day-to-day work as well as activities such as fika, breakfast gatherings, and Lunch & Learn sessions. Our ambition is to create a sustainable everyday work life – both professionally and personally.
-
We offer IVL Part-Time, which allows employees in Sweden to temporarily reduce their working hours, typically to 80%. The arrangement is tailored in dialogue with the manager and may apply for approximately 12–24 months. This provides greater flexibility during different life stages, while maintaining a clear connection to work and continued professional development.
-
We recognise that recovery is essential for long-term performance. As an employee, you are of course entitled to annual leave in accordance with statutory requirements, and we encourage extended periods of leave to support proper recovery.
In addition to your annual leave, we offer working time reduction ("ATK") in Sweden. As a full-time employee, you receive up to 40 hours per year that can be taken as additional time off. This provides extra flexibility in daily life and the opportunity to recover when needed.
-
As an employee in Sweden, you have access to a comprehensive benefits package. We provide a wellness allowance of up to SEK 3,700 per year, as well as reimbursement for services such as influenza vaccinations and prescription glasses for computer work. Through our collective agreement, you also receive occupational pension, insurance coverage, sick pay, and parental pay – creating stable conditions and long-term financial security.
Internship and degree projects
IVL continuously accepts degree workers and interns. With us, you get challenging assignments and a personal supervisor who introduces and guides you in your work. We publish vacant master thesis projects and internships under "jobs". If we don't have anything available at the moment, you are welcome to press "Connect" and mark that you are interested in a degree project. There you can also set your personal subscription settings so that you receive mailings about future vacant jobs/degree projects.
